Yes apple has just released the Apple TV and it is exactly what we thought it would be and better with it having a 40GB Hard drive. But for those who do not know a brief history.
The main concept behind Apple TV is that it is connected to your TV over a wifi connection and using a very close but updated apple front row user system you will be able to stream any media of your itunes from your pc or Mac to your (42 inch HD plasma) TV.

But what we have learnt this Tuesday compared to what we knew at WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) apart from the official name of Apple TV compared to iTV is that it boasts a 40 GB hard drive where you can hold or keep a buffer for streamed data. It has two connections either a HDMI connection or a component cable connection to plug into your TV along with a 2.0 USB port, Ethernet port ,optical audio port and a analog audio port.

The user interface of the Apple TV is very like the front row look, apart from some new visual looks with the photo’s which is exactly what is being put in to leopard.

But its all good having the hardware but as a wise man said DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS!!! And in Apples case they have thought of this and have signed a deal to allow the download of movies from Paramount pictures though itunes store which means Apple now have two big film companies on board. The other one being Walt Disney which had no option but to join itunes since jobs owns a controlling share in the company. So movie’s you will expect to see on itunes soon will be such things as School of rock, tomb raider, the Italian job, Pay check to name a few And hopefully as Jobs said at his keynote there is bound to be more film producers come onboard.
With the launch of the Apple TV their was also the upgrade of the airport base to the airport extreme. Which is now 802.11n wireless networking the same as the Apple TV. This I think is a very important feature if you are going to be streaming HD quality movies from your computer.

The look of the Apple TV is exactly what we saw at the WWDC apart from the name that is plastered on top has changed. The best way you could describe it to someone is a squished Mac mini but in silver. I think it is rather nice and if you were planning to just use that as media player and forget the dvd, hd dvd or blu-ray players altogether it would look rather nice an minimalist underneath your (42 inch HD plasma) TV.

The Apple TV is due out in February 2007 and Apple is accepting pre orders now. I feel like this will be a great feature for any home and is nice that it will be able to connect up to pc’s as well. Although I do feel you would probably get better use out of it if it was streamed of a Mac running itunes. I do have one worry that chucking a Full HD movie across the Wifi will be a little slow but apple have mentioned that you can buffer it on to the 40GB hard drive while watching another video being streamed.

Cool thank you Gigamesh. $500 seems a bit hefty for this device...
Anyway, it´s the same story with the iPod.
iTunes was only released to New Zealand end of last year.
So for all those years, all the people in New Zealand that had an iPod were illegally copying music to their iPod.
There was no possible way we could put music on our iPod without doing it illegally. Not even copying music off a CD we purchased was allowed to be transferred onto our iPod.
And not only that, it´s not like the iPod wasn´t a big hit in New Zealand, almost everyone has one!
For high schools I know, the average amount of kids that have an iPod must be close to 4/5.
Four in every five kids have an iPod! Insane.

The price for the apple TV will be $498 And as i am reading this of the NZ apple store it says estimated shipping February. although this is awesome i can´t see it being much of a hit in NZ since we can´t even get any movies or TV shows from the itunes store but there is nothing stopping u from putting your own media on. plus what appeals to me the most is that it has a 40gb hard drive so i can free up some space on my hard drive and use the apple TV as a sort of media network server.

Awesome article Gigamesh! Nicely written too and cool images!
Apple are just revolutionizing the world!
This is fantastic, and brilliant! They are so ahead of everyone with their devices now.
I do not believe Microsoft will catch up anytime soon for years and years and possibly never.
I think I will have to get one of these soon. They are so cool.
